A program to control type II diabetes in obese Australians has resulted in many going into remission and being able to live without medication.

The study, run by Sydney's Concord Hospital, requires patients to modify their diets, take part in three hours of supervised exercise a week and have their blood sugar levels checked regularly.

The program is the first of its kind in the world to use this method to control diabetes.

The hospital's Dr Nic Kormac says patients have lost weight, reduced their blood pressure, blood sugar and cholesterol levels, and some have stopped taking insulin altogether.

"What these results mean is, they mean two things, they mean that this type of program needs to be made more freely available to the obese patient that has diabetes," he said.

"It's also the general health message, that if you have obesity and type II diabetes you need to focus on achieving a healthier weight, improving your fitness levels in preference to your medications."
